In “The Future is History: How Totalitarianism Reclaimed Russia,” Masha Gessen describes the process of “reinventing” Soviet history for the purposes of Putin’s regime today. The media and complicit society are very effective in remaking the narrative to suit the purposes of the rulers. One thing I’ve noticed, consistently, is the occasional editorial here, or there, or a tweet admonishing us “not to compare” Trump with what happened in the Third Reich. Because “those events were so horrible, there can be no comparison, and you *dishonor the memories of the dead* if you keep on making it.” I suspect that the memories of the victims will be far more dishonored if we fail to stop a genocide a second time.
