I’ve played by the rules. I took all the right classes in high school. My parents paid my way through college. I got the right degree. I got a good salary. Eventually, I married and had a family.
We bought the right house at the right price. We bought the right cars. We invested in our 401k and took a vacation every year. We’ve played by the rules.
I have calculated our budget down to the penny. We have money in savings. We have money in the stock market. We pay our taxes — just what’s required. We are law-abiding citizens. We vote without difficulty. Yes, we’ve played by the rules.
The old lady down the street, who barely gets by on Social Security and can’t pay for medications must not have played by the rules. So that won’t happen to me.
That guy panhandling on the corner with the sign. I’ll bet he thought he could get away with not playing by the rules. That won’t happen to me, either.
That brown lady at the cashier, paying with her food stamp card — I’ll bet she’s not even from here. Definitely not playing by the rules. I belong here, so that won’t happen to me.
The old guy in a wheelchair with a military vest — too bad about his leg. I didn’t volunteer, so that won’t happen to me.
The little girl with the slack jaw in the wheelchair, that’s pretty bad luck. My kids are fine. That won’t happen to me.
The woman who lost her hair and has a GoFundMe page— why didn’t she have better insurance? My company’s is great. That won’t happen to me.
The black guy who got shot by a cop — sorry, that’s a consequence of not playing by the rules. I always play by the rules. That won’t happen to me.
The couple who lost their money because their accountant was a crook and retired in poverty — bad judgment. That won’t happen to me.
The family whose house flooded — what were they thinking? They should have bought a different house somewhere else. My house isn’t in a flood plain. That won’t happen to me.
The house with three generations living in it should have bought houses they could afford. My house is great, and I have a low interest rate. That won’t happen to me.
I have plotted and planned everything out. I play by the rules, so this will continue forever. People should understand that if they plot and plan and budget and save and follow all the rules, then they won’t need help. They won’t need my taxes, or anyone else’s. Because I’m fine. And none of these things will ever happen to me.
