On the political spectrum, today’s Democratic party is about as liberal as Ronald Reagan. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Elizabeth Warren are outliers and disrupters, trying to move the party back to its populist, liberal roots, which made the New Deal and a 40-hour workweek possible, which passed the Equal Rights Act in 1964, thereby effectively losing the South when the GOP jumped on the chance to show that they could be the party of racists. The resistance to this shift from within the Democratic party tells you all you need to know about who they are and who they represent.
Joe Biden, an old white man and longtime corporate shill, is offered up as our savior from Donald Trump, and the corporate-sponsored Democrats hope you play it safe and elevate him to the highest office, where he will continue the corporate pillaging of our government and our economy, but with less tweeting and fewer concentration camps for brown people. (Note that I did not say zero concentration camps.) Joe Biden stands ready to invade uncooperative countries, weaken regulations, provide corporate handouts, and enact palatable legislation that will continue us on the course of destroying the middle class and condemning us to debt slavery for years to come. Yes, Donald Trump is very bad, and his policies kill. Joe Biden’s policies will be mildly better and just as deadly to the poor, however, and this may ultimately result in yet another demagogue who is actually more competent than the hapless Trump.
It is Trump’s childlike and clownish behavior, I suppose, that has lulled the Democrats into thinking that they can behave normally and, in the end, voters will reward them for being the “adults in the room” and put them back in power, where they will continue to do nothing for working people. The president of the Weimar Republic, Paul von Hindenburg, also thought he was running the show when he installed the incompetent Adolf Hitler. The Democrats are fooling themselves.
Eight years of Obama policies left the majority of Americans hardly better off, which is why so many former Obama voters switched to Trump in the first place. And now we’ve had the 2018 “blue wave” that has retaken the House, and for what? For Nancy Pelosi to offhandedly take impeachment off the table because it “would look bad?” For Congress to subpoena documents and people, only to be ignored by a White House that says, “I triple-dog dare you!” For an attorney general to blatantly lie and obstruct Congress while waiting for them to blink first?
Congress’s complete inability to stand up for their own branch of government and apply the law to government officials who are determined to break it daily will usher in the end of the republic faster than the coopted and immoral Republicans who have all signed their name in blood in Trump’s book of souls. Where are the arrests for contempt? Why are Democratic leaders making nice-nice at the White House about yet another Infrastructure Week? It is past time to take off the gloves and to start acting like our democracy is at stake, because it is. If these cowards allow the executive branch to ignore the law, then we are lost. We will no longer have even the nominal say in our governing that we supposedly do today. Political enemies will be disposed of, and speech will be curtailed. People will die, and the rich will continue looting while the rest of us fall into deeper poverty.
We have no choice but to put our energy into civil disobedience and alternative institutions, which we will have to build ourselves. Vote while you can, certainly, and don’t believe the media narrative about electability. Vote for someone with real integrity, not just fancy words and multimillion-dollar corporate backing. In the meantime, call the Democrats into account. If now is not the time to act, then WHEN?
